Chey's Off-Road Racing Pics from Australia
 |
I really got into off-road
racing in a big way when I lived in Alice Springs. There were literally
thousands of miles of wild, open desert and lots of time on my hands.
This picture obviously taken at the beginning of the project. |

Here's Pete hard at work. He and Rod Smith of AutoCraft
were wonderful mentors and builders of many of the cars on the racing
circuit. |
 |
Here I am getting ready for the big annual race -
the Finke Desert Race. It's like the Baja race...only it's done Aussie
style with lots of partying! |
 |
Stephen flew over from the States to be on my pit
crew. He had the nasty job of driving hundreds of miles over dirt
tracks, carrying fuel cans and emergency supplies. |
 |
RACE DAY - getting ready to drive out to the starting
position. |
 |
As you can see, I had to be very comfortable with
my navigator, Pat Koehler... there was no room to spare and it certainly
wasn't built for comfort. Pat was really good at pushing out the debris
that got inside when I drove through the bushes and trees. |
 |
And, we're off! Sadly, we broke down halfway through
the race and could not finish. It was great fun anyway! |
 |
Just to give you an idea of the type of vehicles and
conditions we encounters. This is a "truggy" - combination
truck and buggy. A design by Rod Smith. |
 |
Yvon was the only other woman driver that year. She
never wins, but she always finishes. Good on yer, Yvon! |
